Watts Green?: Clallam County PUD's Green Power Program

Clallam County PUD is committed to supporting clean, renewable energy developments. One of the ways that you can do to support us in these efforts is to sign up for our Watts Green program. You can do that by visiting, calling your local PUD office, or by sending in this form - (50kb PDF) , completed, to our main office. The Watts Green rate is only 1.7 cent per kilowatt-hour more than the standard rate.

Where does the Green Power come from?

Clallam County PUD's current supply of renewable energy comes from Klickitat PUD's landfill gas project. Klickitat PUD's H.W. Hill Landfill Gas Power Plant was named a 2000 Governor's Pollution Prevention Award Winner by the State Department of Ecology.

Landfill gas (LFG) is created as solid waste decomposes in a landfill. This gas consists of about 50 percent methane, the primary component of natural gas, about 50 percent carbon dioxide, and a small amount of non-methane organic compounds. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is over 20 times more effective in trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide (CO2). Municipal solid waste landfills are the largest source of human-related methane emissions in the United States, accounting for about 34 percent of these emissions. Instead of allowing LFG to escape into the air, it can be captured, converted, and used as an energy source.

The landfill gas is extracted from landfills using a series of wells and a blower/flare (or vacuum) system. This system directs the collected gas to a central point where it can be filtered and compressed. The purified compressed gas is then piped to an engine that has been modified to accept gas, where it is burned to generate electricity. LFG is the only renewable source of power that actually removes pollution from the air.
